When it comes to selecting the siding for your home the choices can be overwhelming between the colors, textures, materials, etc. The type of siding you select
plays a big role in the curb appeal and value of your house. Your budget also plays a large part in determining the choices available to you.
Vinyl siding is still the number one choice of material for most home owners and this is primarily driven by the price point. Vinyl siding is available in a wide range
of choices these days from the inexpensive basic vinyl lap siding to the higher end insulated varieties that visually look like real wood. Smooth and wood grain
textures are available in widths typically ranging from 3 inches up to 9 inches. The color choices seem to be never ending. The key with vinyl siding is a quality
installation to avoid leaks, pieces popping loose and excessive waviness as it expands and contracts with temperature changes. Make sure you select a quality
siding installer to match the quality of the material selected to have as beautiful of a home ten years after it is installed.
Another option although not widely used or available any longer for residential siding is aluminum. Aluminum had its issues with denting from hail or other
objects striking it. It is still used widely as a wrapping material for trim in combination with vinyl siding. Repairing damaged aluminum siding now a days usually
is accomplished by replacement with vinyl or some other material.
Cement fiber siding has gained in popularity due to its durability and resistance to pests like termites. Cost has probably kept it from being the number one
choice for many. The technology for this material has also advance in recent years making it available in various patterns, textures and panel sizes. It is also
available as a pre-finished material with several color choices. Many of the brands available have up to 50 year warranties on the product. Cement fiber siding,
many times referred to as hardiplank, requires properly trained and qualified installers both from a safety and quality perspective. The pre-finished materials
must be installed with the protective film in place only to be removed after fastened to the building. The dust given off when cutting the material contains silica
requiring special precautions for the installers.
Last but not least are wood based products ranging from the lower cost pressed wood materials to cedar or redwood. A caution when using the pressed wood
products is their affinity to absorb water so proper caulking, sealing and drainage is critical. Cedar and redwood products tend to be pest resistant and hold up
well in moist environments. Cedar siding tends to come with a higher price point and is often used as an accent material for gables and trim. The wood products
are easier to install. A quality carpenter familiar with trim installation can complete the work.
Masonry products for siding like stone, stucco and synthetic stucco (EFIS) are another subject in and of themselves.
All of these types of siding have been widely used throughout the greater Cincinnati and northern Kentucky area. The cement fiber siding and cedar are found
more often in areas like Mason, West Chester, Hebron, Blue Ash, Montgomery, Ft. Thomas, and Villa Hills.
